Abstract

Age is considered an important factor when thinking about a treatment that involves rapid palatal expansion, in order to obtain an orthopedic expansion. The expansion is not achieved only by separating the midpalatal suture, but also by its effects on the circummaxillary sutures. These structures show greater resistance to expansion with age; producing predominantly dentoalveolar effects and harmful effects in the periodontium of adolescents and young adults. Therefore, the Rapid Palatine Expansion Assisted by Microimplants or known as MARPE can offer an alternative approach to expand the bone in the surgical intervention in in these patients maximizing the skeletal effect. This work consists in a literature review of the applications, changes and effects of the use of this technique.
